To illustrate our perspective on implementation science and mindfulness programs in education, we provide an overview of several studies conducted on MindUP. We emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary research in evaluating mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) for students and teachers alike, research that utilizes mixed-method designs and that examines multiple outcomes from multiple observers (e.g., self-reports, teacher reports, peer reports). We suggest that the transitional years of pre- and early adolescence (i.e., 9–12 year olds) may be a particularly effective time to introduce mindfulness practices to young people. We discuss how mindfulness practices and SEL activities may be synergistic, potentially bolstering the efficacy of each, and describe the iterative process of developing, implementing, and evaluating a program that includes both elements. They will have a unique learning environment and experience, equipping them with skills, tools and knowledge that will help them to live happy, fulfilling lives.In this chapter, we describe the MindUP program: A universal, mindfulness-based social and emotional learning (SEL) program designed to be implemented in schools by regular classroom teachers. Our holistic approach to cultivating mindful humans will equip the next generation in ways that a traditional approach may fall short. Mindfulness is paying attention to ourselves and others, and understanding the role of empathy in healthy interactions. It encourages us to explore with our senses and stay present in the moment. Mindfulness is also paying attention to what’s happening around us so that we become more active, curious, intentional humans. Mindfulness and the essence of it is more than sitting quietly, focusing our breathing and meditating. The added bonus of our unique space is that children will have a natural environment to practice what they learn, enhancing their uptake of the concepts we explore. More than ever, we need to develop our mental fitness to cultivate happier, healthier and more balanced lives – this program supports those objectives. MindUP emphasizes mindfulness awareness practices, social emotional learning (shown to enhance a child’s success in learning and life generally), and positive psychology to build a child’s resilience and sense of well-being. Children develop the skills and knowledge they need to effectively regulate emotions and stress, form positive relationships, and behave kindly and compassionately. Rooted in neuroscience, this program educates children about the brain and its functions so that they feel in control and empowered. Yurt School Mindfulness Day programs will be have components from the MindUP program. We collaborate with Mother Nature and practice alongside our community members, each with their own unique journey. We practice with our hearts, hands and minds. We practice mindfulness using our bodies and our senses. Here, they will learn and build life skills that are often neglected in traditional educational settings, allowing them to become more empathetic, well-rounded humans.Īt Yurt School, we explore mindfulness in all parts of life.

They will have learning experiences outdoors, inside of the Healing Yurt, and within The Healing Centre, which will encourage engagement and stimulation. Our Vision: Children will engage in a curriculum centered around building mindfulness and social emotional skills.

Learning at Healing In Colour truly comes full circle – just like the Healing Yurt! Play-based learning will help build easily transferable life skills, and experiences centered around mindfulness will support social-emotional learning and development. Using indoor and outdoor spaces on a 2 acre property, children will have plenty of opportunities to engage their senses in natural settings, fostering their curiosity and growth through investigation and experimenting. This nature-based program seeks to build independent, thoughtful humans who will flourish in their new world. What better place to experience holistic, 360° learning than Yurt School!
